Certified Dogs Training
Dog Trainer Certification
The Certified Dog Trainer Exam is intended to test an applicant’s basic level of skills to
provide the general public with a standard of expectation for what constitutes a “basic level”
of expertise. The passing of the CDT Exam also provides recognition and approval from peer
professionals within an internationally established organization. Upon passing the Exam,
IACP shall confer the title of Certified Dog Trainer (CDT). The trainer who passes the CDT
Exam shall be entitled to use the initials CDT after his or her name, provided that: he or
she is an IACP member and adheres to the IACP Code of Conduct. Should a Certified Dog Trainer
fail to maintain IACP membership, that trainer no longer falls under the Code of Ethics, and
the CDT title, therefore, shall be withdrawn by IACP. The CDT title may also be removed from
a member in good standing, for just cause, by the IACP Board of Directors based on recommendations
from a Grievance Committee.
Once a trainer earns the CDT title, he or she may take the Certified Dog Trainer Advanced
(CDTA) Exam. The CDTA Exam is a unique and remarkable examination in that it is the first
exam of its kind in existence that we know of where a video tape provides the means to have
your skills “observed” and evaluated by judges throughout the nation.

Guide Dog Trainer
There is no external training course for becoming a Guide Dog Trainer. Guide Dog Trainers at Guide Dogs Victoria (GDV) are generally recruited from within the organisation. Staff Training is conducted internally by the Guide Dog Services Department and has a theoretical and practical component.
Trainees are educated and supervised by an experienced Guide Dog Instructor where they learn how to assess potential guide dogs for their suitability to commence Guide Dog training. Once the trainee demonstrates the required levels of competency and understanding through practical and theoretical assessment they will qualify with a Certificate in Early Training.
To go on and become a fully qualified Guide Dog Trainer, the trainee must be selected for further education and training in the Advanced Guide Dog Training cycle. When the trainee demonstrates the required levels of competency and understanding in Advanced Training, they will qualify as a Guide Dog Trainer.

Dog Whispering Behind the Scenes
Dog whispering is a training technique based on canine ethology. So, it takes into account those behaviors that are natural in dogs, but usually ignore the principles of learning theories.
The fundamental premise of dog whispering is that the owner should become the leader of the pack. This is also known as the theory or paradigm of the alpha dog.
According to the alpha dog paradigm, dogs establish dominance hierarchies in the pack. Thus, you should achieve the higher hierarchy, the alpha dog status, in order to maintain a good relationship with your dog.
Though it is not clear when the paradigm of the alpha dog appeared, it is well known that it gained popularity in the eighties.
Jan Fennell and Cesar Millan are two of the most famous practitioners of dog whispering. The latter is perhaps the most famed trainer at these days, because of his show "The Dog Whisperer" broadcasted by National Geographic.
Some authors say that dog whispering is based on scientific studies of wolf packs. Others say the technique was developed after studying the social behavior of dogs for several years.
Unfortunately, there are several non-standardized variants of this technique. Besides, some of the technique variants seem to be based only on popular beliefs and not on real studies about dog behavior.
Dog whispering by itself is useless to teach obedience commands. For that reason, many trainers don't accept it as real training technique. Moreover, it is also frequent that practitioners of this technique don't consider themselves as dog trainers. Instead, they claim they are people who can communicate with dogs by a deep understanding of dog behavior and proper body language.
Dog whispering advocates claim that the technique provides a natural way to communicate with dogs. Some of these people also tend to use non-violent procedures. However, the degree of violence is highly variable and depends on the method used by the trainer.
Detractors claim that there is a lack of solid arguments in this technique. They also claim that dog whispering is based on popular beliefs, which could be true for several of its variants.
Same detractors usually question the alpha dog paradigm and argue that there's no need for a model based on dominance hierarchies.
Biologists Raymond and Lorna Coppinger are among the few people who carried out extensive scientific studies on social behavior and evolution of dogs. Their studies reject the paradigm of the alpha dog, and these scientists say that wolves and dogs have very different behavior repertoires. Therefore, studies on the behavior of wolves shouldn't be useful for a better understanding of dog's behavior.
Perhaps further studies on canine ethology could lead to a better understanding of dog behavior. Meanwhile, most dog whispering variants can't provide clear and precise guidelines for dog training; even when there are some really successful "dog whisperers" like Cesar Millan and Jan Fennell.

Dog Training - Curbing the Barking Habit
A dog is inclined to bark when it sees other animals, strangers or even visitors to your home. Many think that it is the natural instinct of a dog to bark to protect its keeper or the home where it belongs. The dog will stop barking only when the cause is out of range of his sight.
The habit of barking can be quite annoying not only to you but to your neighbors around, specially if the barking is more frequent at night. You need to do some dog training and curb the barking habit of your dog.
You can obedience train your dog with some simple phrases like "it's okay", "no", "stop barking", "quiet" and then reward it. This will certainly not be an easy task happening overnight. You need to pursue the training for some time until it gets accustomed to certain sights and not react with a bark. If you happen to have a cottage with a yard then it's a good idea to fence it so your dog cannot see outside and react to sights that bring on the barking. The only thing that will now call on the barking will be the people who visit you.
You can teach your dog to curb its barking when you have visitors as well, with the same training as in the case of strangers or animals. Once your dog is used to seeing your visitors more regularly it will naturally stop barking. Your hired domestic help will be an occasional caller. If your dog takes time to get used to the hired help's visit and continues to bark then one way would be to lock your dog into a room where your hired help does not need to enter.
In the case of a friend visiting, you need your dog to get used to the person by allowing the two to become friends. With frequent visits from your friend your dog will become accustomed to seeing your friend around and gradually stop barking.
When you have relatives visiting and staying over, you will need to train your dog to understand that it is safe with the people around. It will not be possible for you to lock your dog up in any of the rooms. On such occasions you will need to have your dog hang around with you and get used to your houseguests. The dog is barking out of fear for itself or for you as well. Once it realizes that the people around are harmless, it will naturally relax. However, remember to reward your dog during these times as well.
Train your dog to curb its barking habit only when the visitor is known to you or if the hour of barking can be annoying to others around. The dog's bark is an alert warning signal when someone is approaching your door and should preferably be rewarded.
Dog Training Equipment - An Informative Guide
Today, there is a large selection of dog training equipment available to professional trainers and amateurs alike. With many different manufactures offering breed specific dog training equipment, it has never been easier to find the right tool to train your dog.
The most commonly used items o f dog training equipment, which are readily available online or at your local pet store, include: muzzles, harnesses, collars, leashes, jump sticks, hurdles and bite suits. Many people have successfully trained their pet dogs to be effective guard dogs as well; and a wide range of products are available to help you to train your dog to attack more vigorously and in a controlled manner.
Full body bite suits, which have been used for many years by k-9 police units around the world, are now available to consumers and come in a variety of materials and sizes. They allow you to train your dog to attack intruders in a safe manner, both for the dog and the trainer.
Bite sleeves are a less expensive option, and can be worn on the arm to train puppies and small to medium sized dogs how to bite. Most sleeves are made from soft but durable material and come with internal support handles, that allow you to train your dog comfortably and for longer periods of time. In this area, try to buy equipment that has been endorsed with a certification by the American humane association, and complies with their guidelines for humane dog training.
For obedience dog training equipment, there are many options available also. Perhaps the most tried and tested piece of equipment, and the most cost effective too, is the dog treat. Dog treats come in lots of different flavors, which range from the plain to the exotic, and can be used to reward your dog after he or she has successfully completed a task. Dog treats can be purchased from any pet store.
Hurdles and jump sticks allow you to train your dog to run obstacle courses, and with many hurdles being made from lightweight plastic and vinyl materials, you can do so from the convenience of your back yard or the local park.
